RAFAEL PEREZ-PINEIRO is an attorney with substantial experience in the field of Intellectual Property ("IP") law. His experience covers litigation; the drafting of patentability, infringement, invalidity and right-to-use opinions; licensing of software, technology, and IP rights; open source software investigations and clearances; due diligence in mergers and acquisitions; technology standards; and client counseling. Also, Rafael has procured patents in the areas of software engineering, computer hardware, semiconductors, radio-frequency and logic circuits, mechanical and biomedical devices, and business methods.
While in law school, Rafael worked as a Patent Examiner with the United States Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTO"). There, he attended the Patent Academy for a 6-month period where he was trained on patent validity issues and USPTO procedures. He then joined the law firm of Finnegan Henderson as a Student Associate, where he was formally trained in the art of patent preparation and prosecution.
As an attorney, Rafael has worked in the D.C. office of Blank Rome LLP and in the Miami office of Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP. During his time at those firms, Rafael had the opportunity to handle all aspects of pre-trial litigation on patent, trademark, copyright and unfair competition cases. More recently, Rafael worked for IBM Corporation in New York, where he gained significant experience in transactional, licensing, and due diligence matters.
Rafael obtained his law degree from The George Washington University - a school traditionally recognized as having the top IP program in the nation. Rafael also has a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from The Johns Hopkins University and University of Puerto Rico, respectively. Before entering the legal field Rafael worked as an electronics engineer for the National Security Agency.
